The Posture of Grace
In Marilynne Robinson's novel 'Home', a sister and brother move
cautiously towards reconcilation--after decades apart. "Until you
forgive," writes Robinson, "you defend yourself against the possibility
of understanding." And then a bit later: "If you forgive...you may
indeed still not understand, but you will be ready to understand, and
that is the posture of grace." Ah, the posture of grace. Maybe that's
what this month is really all about. (I recommend the novel: a great holiday gift for someone who loves great writing!)
