RESIST: "Code-Red-Lockdown"

"Dear Families, Friends and Guardians,

On Friday November 8th, 2019 during second period class SCHS will participate in a CODE RED LOCKDOWN Drill (active shooter training).  Students will watch a video describing the RUN-HIDE-FIGHT protocol.  The video describes protocols in an active shooter situation for deciding when it is appropriate to RUN - HIDE or FIGHT.  It is important for the students to understand to remain clam, the importance of listening to the teacher and following their rules explicitly, and to “SAY something when they SEE something” that may jeopardize safety on campus.

It's quite possible that the true measure of America, the true measure of our maturity and our character, is our public school.  And if that's indeed the case, we are failing.  As a democracy, as a community, as an experiment in human collaboration and care.

When a public school--in this case, a high school--is moved to rehearse this kind of madness, we have failed our children.  And we have failed one another.  For too long we have yielded to the militarized, weaponized anxieties of the gun lobby.  For too long we have accomodated that lobby's bloodthirsty appetite.  And we have lost that battle.  Lost it in Newtown, Connecticut.  Lost it in Pittsburgh at the Tree of Life.  Lost it in Orlando at The Pulse.  Just plain lost it.  Watch the video.  It's absolutely chilling.

I read this email above--from good people, thoughtful administrators, teachers I trust--and I weep.  I weep for the thoughtful caretakers who have to write this stuff and pull off the drills.  I weep for the children (including my own) who have to endure the run-hide-fight crap, as they study for poetry tests and biology labs.  And I weep for the parents of the next group of kids--who will die in some god-forsaken rain of bullets, on some school campus somewhere.

God, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
God, have mercy.
