A Single Garment of Destiny

This weekend, we remember Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy as prophet, activist, preacher.  He reminded us - or rather insisted - that ours is "an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny."  I guess it's a choice we make.  Do we choose that network?  Do we put on that garment?

Given the enormity of the catastrophe in Haiti, it's possible to shy away, overwhelmed, detached.  But King has shown - in life as well as in teaching - that brotherhood and sisterhood make us human.  We are wisest and kindest in our compassion.  And, really, this is our reason for being.  To choose the network of mutuality.  To wear the single garment of destiny.

I hope my friends will want to support the United Church of Christ's relief efforts.
