Crooked Ancient Steps

Crooked ancient steps
Half-way up an unknown hill
Lead nowhere -
Four or five steps into lush,
Wild, senseless grasses,
And wildflowers of
A thousand colors.

Stopping -
Now there's a verb -
Stopping and wondering
Why these aimless steps
Excite me so;

Some lazy dove
Hoots, hoots in love,
High in a eucalyptus tree,
And closer still, a bee
Makes passionate approach
Into the sweet center
Of a wildflower
I cannot name.

Lead on, O ancient steps,
Half-way up an unknown hill,
Into lush, wild
Senseless grasses.
I have no idea where you
Lead me.
And yet the dove seems
So delighted and the bee,
Bewildered.
