Prayers for Israel and Palestine

Prayers for Israel and Palestine as aid to Gaza is seized

With so many of you, I'm restless tonight, praying for restraint in Israel and hoping for relief in Gaza.  As I prepare for a July visit in Israel and Palestine, with 24 others from Santa Cruz, I hope we'll be open to the prompting of spirit and conscience.  There are so many temptations in this work: the temptation to walk away exasperated, the temptation to focus disappointment as righteous indignation, the temptation to treat people as 'issue.'  May we resist these, every one of them.  And may peace have a future in the land where prophets urged nations to beat swords into ploughshares.

If you're looking for a thoughtful piece to read on all this, you'll appreciate Amos Oz' reflection in the NYT.  He's one of Israel's truly great writers.  And his thinking about this week's violence is deeply moving.
