It's Time to Repeal the Second Amendment

Is this what our country is and must always be?  Is this -- this violence, this hatred, this absurd addiction to firearms and shooting -- is this really the price we must pay for political liberty and freedom from tyranny?  I don't get it.  I don't get it at all.  I was always taught that what made America America was democracy, civic engagement, shared purpose.  Even a willingness to make sacrifices for neighbors known and unknown.  I don't see how all this violence (and the industries that promote it) makes America any wiser, any freer, any better.  It's beyond me.

It's time, past time, beyond time, to revoke the Second Amendment, repeal it, start over again.  These guns no longer make us safe.  This mayhem will never protect us from fascism and totalitarianism.  And these crazy, awful, bloodthirsty weapons will never again empower a righteous few to resist an overreaching state.  Those days are long gone.  I'm signing the petition that's linked above -- and I hope others will do the same.

And let's start again.  Let's finally acknowledge that the Second Amendment does not serve a free, diverse, democratic nation.  Let's do what we should have done generations ago and rid ourselves of the mania that justifies mass murder in Connecticut elementary schools and Charleston churches...

For the sake of our children, and their children...

For the sake of a free and fearless democracy...

For the sake of decency and human progress...

Let's repeal the Second Amendment and start over again.  Finally.
