A new friend reminds me that Washington is at least two cities in a single district. One's the seat of government, a national city, a gathering of idealists and lobbyists from all over the country and planet. The other's a city of vibrant neighborhoods, an American city steeped in conflict and slavery, a community of unsettling histories, great music and art; it's a city that's constantly changing, making life especially hard on some, struggling to keep its civic soul.
I'll be living in both, come August. And the challenge of it is real to me now! Bring it on.
