ON 2020: "Dear CNN"

1.  Iowa (like New Hampshire) is one state of 50, and a small one at that.  Its 41 delegates to the Democratic National Convention are a drop in the bucket, and (statistically) insignificant.

2.  This Presidential Primary--and particularly THIS ONE--is not a round of "Survivor" (a reality TV show).  And it's not a horse race (win-place-show, fancy hats, etc).  And it's not about sound bytes and momentum and superficial front page headlines.  Your punditry doesn't begin to get at how important this is.

3.  It is--and this is SO IMPORTANT--about democracy and ideas about democracy and proposals for governing in the spirit of democracy.  It is about the kinds of leadership that allow democracy to flourish and expand and solve our significant problems.

4.  What's important this week isn't (a) who got a 'bump' from Iowa, (b) who 'wins' New Hampshire, but (c) who casts the most compelling vision for governance in the post-Trump world.  That contest goes on to South Carolina and Nevada, on to California and Georgia, on and on to the Convention itself.

5.  In that spirit, what's equally important is who will follow through--with the kind of integrity that inspires public trust--in retooling our democratic experiment for the next 20 years.  We've been dealt a terrible blow these past four or five years.  Who believes in the wisdom and promise of democracy?  Who manifests the skills to revive our institutions and hopes?
