SUNRISE: "Easter Prayers, Easter Life, Easter Now"

PRAYERS FOR EASTER SUNRISE, APRIL 12:

Opening Verse
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb
O sometimes, it causes me to
         tremble, tremble, tremble
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb

Were you there when they rolled the stone away
O sometimes, it causes me to
         tremble, tremble, tremble
Were you there when they rolled the stone away

Psalm 19 (as translated by Bruce Sanguin in If Darwin Prayed)

Let your word, O God, be a lamp unto our feet,
And a strong cord of strength for your many peoples.

        Gracious God,
how can creation sing your praises,
except with the red wings of blackbirds
        flashing across blue sky,
and the croak and splash of frogs
playing hide and seek in the ponds?

How can the firmament proclaim your handiwork,
except in the wagging tail of a puppy,
and the focused attention of a toddler
soaking in the wonder of it all?

How can the heavens proclaim your glory,
except through a morning sun rising upon gold-green grass,
lighting up the face of lovers as Earth spins them
once more into a new day?

Your beauty and goodness, O Immanent One,
        require Earth's diversity
        and our own wildness,
breaking down -- and out of --
        the monotony of prescribed patterns,
choosing rather to take our place
        in the dancing procession
        of differentness,
the variegated life of Christ finding expression
in this body of the church
and the bodies of our kin-creatures.

Make a harvest, O Holy One,
        of our quirkiness,
that we might be your radiant presence.
        Amen.

Let your word, O God, be a lamp unto our feet,
And a strong cord of strength for your many peoples.

Jesus' Prayer
   Earth-maker, life-giver, pain-bearer,
Source of all that is and all that shall be,
Father and Mother of us all,
Loving God in whom is heaven:
May the hallowing of your name
   echo through the universe!

May your heavenly will be done
by all creatures great and small!
   And may your commonwealth
   of peace and freedom
sustain our hope and come on earth!

With the bread we need this day, feed us.
For the hurt we inflict on one another, forgive us.
   By your grace and mercy,
strengthen us through seasons of temptation,
and spare us from trials too great to endure.
Free us from bigotry and evil, for service and truth.

For you reign in the glory of the power that is Love.  Amen.

John 20
Friends of God: the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Waymaker, the Peace of God.

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.’ Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes.

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping?’ She said to them, ‘They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.’ When she had said this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking?’ Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, ‘Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him in Hebrew, ‘Rabbouni!’ (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, ‘Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.”  Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

These are the words of God, the story of liberation and wholeness.

May God add blessing and wisdom to the reading of these words.

Five Minutes of Silence & Meditation
You’re invited to experience the active, generous presence of God—in your body, in your soul, in our ruah.  Remember that the Bible uses this one Hebrew word (ruah) for “spirit” and for “wind” and for “breath.”  As we sit quietly and breath mindfully, we are aware of the Spirit’s tender and resilient movement in our lives.

If your mind wanders, do not be harsh or judgmental.  Simply notice the wandering mind, and then return to your breath.  Return to the Spirit who is your companion in prayer.

Prayers of the People
With gratitude for the bonds of friendship, in faithfulness to our calling as the beloved community, we pray now, for one another, for all our neighbors, and for sisters, brothers and friends near and far.

Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison, Kyrie eleison.

For those who are sick and ailing, for those who are anxious and frightened, that they may know the generous spirit of grace and have access to the best of care and counsel:

         Kyrie…

For health professionals around the world, for first responders, and for public health servants who are working to provide clear guidance, effective testing and compassionate care:

         Kyrie…

For those who have died among us in these last two months, for their faithful journey into mystery, for their witness to mercy and light in the midst of darkness:

         Kyrie…

For those among us in prisons, jails and detention; and for those who are victimized by racism, hatred and the bigotry of our leaders, that they may know courage and peace and freedom of mind and body:

         Kyrie...

For others we name here and now, that they may know the calming touch of your peace and find comfort and companionship among friends:

         Kyrie…

Philippians 2
Let your word, O God, be a lamp unto our feet,
And a strong cord of strength for your many peoples.

If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,
who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
   as something to be exploited,
but emptied himself,
taking the form of a servant,
   being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
   he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
   even death on a cross.

Therefore God also highly exalted him
   and gave him the name
   that is above every name,
so that at the name of Jesus
   every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue should confess
   that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Maker of Heaven and Earth.

Let your word, O God, be a lamp unto our feet,
And a strong cord of strength for your many peoples.

Response
We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord,
We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord,
And we pray that all unity may one day be restored,
And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love
Yes, they'll know we are Christians by our love

All praise to Sophia, all praise to her Christ,
All praise to the Advocate whose mercies all suffice
        Making frightened spirits bold
        And making foolish spirits wise
And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love

Yes, they'll know we are Christians by our love
