The governor says that "Texas grieves,"
But we're not buying it, not now, not ever again,
Because he's told us about this grieving
Over and over again, after Pulse, and after Gilroy,
And after Sandy Hook, and after Charlestown.
His grief is tired, practiced and offensive to us.
His words, pure posturing, empty promises.
This means nothing--nothing--to the little ones dead
At a Garlic Festival, or a mall on a Saturday morning.
The one who truly grieves is moved to action.
The one who truly grieves locks his guns away forever.
The one who truly grieves weeps and weeps,
And does not stop weeping until 19-year-old boys
And 21-year-old boys are weaned from hatred,
And are instead playing soccer, working good jobs,
Painting landscapes and learning to cook
At the soup kitchen for hungry immigrants,
Just around the corner, in their neighborhood,
Where they live.
