There is light shining in the darkness, and sweet determination swelling in the hearts of the people...and nothing that the oligarchs can do can change that...no executive order can diminish it.
As a church, we are deeply committed to public action and hands-on service. We will show up for protests and sign up to cook shelter meals and organize a sanctuary city at every level. And this work is our mission.
Still we need artists, poets to point us in the direction of the good, in the direction of the generous. And this concert--NOTES AGAINST THE BAN--brings these artists not only to our doorstep, but into the very heart of our sanctuary.
If you're anywhere near Santa Cruz this fall, I hope you'll join us for this gathering of music, creativity and resistance. These artists insist that the light shines still: in Sudan and Yemen, Libya and Iraq, Iran and Syria and Somalia. And they will move us to dream of an America beyond the bluster of bigots where all of us--from all these places and more--are sister and brother, united in respect and compassion.
