I like what Jim Wallis is saying about fundamentalist Christians and their fears around Pete Buttigieg's candidacy. Wallis wonders if Buttigieg's enthusiasm for Christian faith, and his conviction that faith can inform both his sexuality and his politics, will expose fundamentalist fears for what they are: calculated, manipulative, hateful. Wallis says evangelicals are afraid Buttigieg's candidacy will shatter the public's misguided sense (encouraged by those same rightwing preachers) that the Gospel's all about sexual morality and patriarchy--and then cause Americans to appreciate the passion of the Gospel for radical economic justice, radical racial reconciliation/reparations, and radical care for the earth. At that point, Wallis says, evangelicals are going to have to face the music: at least those on the Hard Right will. They've sold the country a Gospel that just isn't Christian, and certainly isn't consistent with the spiritual and social vision of Jesus.
