POEM: "He is Calling"

“One is called to live nonviolently, even if the change one works for seems impossible. It may or may not be possible to turn the US around through nonviolent revolution. But one thing favors such an attempt: the total inability of violence to change anything for the better.”
— Daniel Berrigan SJ

"HE IS CALLING"

Berrigan on my mind this morning, as I towel off,
Or maybe in my heart, hints of baptism rolling off my thighs.
I ache for Usama's kids in Bethlehem,
And for Ernie's kids in Cameroon,
And every family huddling in some awful closet in Rafah,
Praying, and praying, and praying.

I know that he is calling...

Even if the change, the future "seems impossible."
Even if the feast seems tragically unreal.
Even if the damned drones continue to buzz over Gaza,
And the bombs I paid for keep falling on children of God.

I know that he is calling...

And on the roof, across the way,
A dove prays for me, and for all those families,
And for the courage of all who wait, and all who hope,
And all who weep, and all who sit in,
And all who resist, and all, all, all
Who love.

And I pull on my pants and brush my crooked teeth.
For he is calling.
And I must go.
